OMAHA, NE, January 4, 2021 – In late 2020, Volano Solutions announced it has changed its name to Volano Software and launched a new website: www.volanosoftware.com. The name change was made to more accurately reflect what the company does, and the website was designed to be more informative and user-friendly to clients and prospective clients while also letting the firm’s personality shine through.
Founded in 2007 by Rod Smith and Don Stavneak, Volano has been delivering database, website, and mobile apps, reporting systems, and other custom software services to Omaha-area clients. The company has grown from its two founders to over 20 employees and is continually expanding.
Volano has worked with over 100 clients since its inception including Triage Staffing, Iowa Western Community College, AGP and American Fence Company. Each project is unique to the client, meeting specific needs, typically in a time of new opportunity or to fix a problem or inefficiency.
“We really get to know each client and learn their business and their industry,” said Stavneak. “As a result, we’ve developed subject matter expertise in many industries, and can apply our success process to any project in any industry.”
Along the way, Volano has created its own software products as well. Vortex is a ‘jump start’ platform that reduces the risk profile and time to complete a software project which in turn reduces the customer’s cost by 30%. Vortex was launched in 2019 and is now the core of dozens of new systems. Volano also created a SaaS product called Action Card in 2014. Action Card helps organizations achieve operational consistency and efficiency across all their locations. Action Card has grown to 60 clients that manage +10,000 locations in 25 countries. Volano continues to maintain and augment the Action Card software.
Like many companies, Volano has temporarily moved its meetings online to keep clients and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once safe again, clients and employees alike are eager to return to the collaborative space in the Mastercraft Building at 1111 North 13th Street in Millwork Commons. Smith and Stavneak have the only staff-centric software development firm near downtown Omaha. While physical location is not necessarily the deciding factor for clients, the founders note that clients do like to meet in person and stop into the office. Of course, the office itself is fun and complete with games, a popcorn machine and drinks.
“We hope to get back to hosting clients and friends in the office one day,” Smith said. “When we can take something highly technical and gather around a table and write out the plan on a white board, ideas form and everyone contributes to making it better. We really work alongside our clients, more like an extension of their internal team than a vendor.”

Wait. What’s the problem again? Several years ago I was working in Healthcare for a tech startup. The provider had to step through every single screen and check a box regardless […]
